Egypt's Ministry of Supply prepares rollout of direct discount bread subsidy system
Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Dr. Sherif Farouk met with Abdullah Ghrab, head of the General Bakery Division, to monitor municipal bakeries and confirm readiness for the direct‑discount system that will govern Egypt's subsidised bread. The new electronic system is designed to tighten governance, improve transparency and speed financial settlements among all parties in the bread production and distribution chain without changing the amount of bread citizens receive, the price of a loaf, or beneficiaries' rights.
Production was temporarily increased to 10% of capacity, with a plan to raise it to 40% later, and the next phase will shift to cash support, starting with wheat purchase, milling and flour delivery to bakeries. Implementation is scheduled to begin on 1 August 2026; the standard loaf will weigh 90 g and cost 20 piastres. The ministry will continue field visits and technical support to ensure a smooth rollout across all governorates.
