Egypt's Ministry of Supply Sets New Tourist Bread Prices

The Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade issued a decision requiring all bakeries to display the prices and weights of tourist bread and viennoiserie and to adhere to set price points: an 80‑gram loaf for 2 EGP, a 60‑gram loaf for 1.5 EGP, and a 40‑gram loaf for 1 EGP. The ministry said it will intensify inspections to ensure compliance and prevent overpricing or short‑weighting.

Bakers objected, noting that they were not consulted on the pricing and that recent rises in flour, fuel, solar energy and labor costs have increased production expenses. Abdullah Ghrab, head of the General Bakery Department, explained that the pricing study dates back more than a year to the tenure of former minister Ali Al‑Masili, but economic variables delayed its implementation. He urged all roughly 230,000 bakeries to follow the announced prices and announced plans for a meeting with the minister to discuss implementation mechanisms and balance consumer protection with bakery viability.
