Egypt's National Theatre Festival expands to provinces with workshops and new productions
The 19th edition of Egypt’s National Theatre Festival, led by artist Mohamed Riyadh, has shifted its focus from Cairo to the provinces. A tour of Dakahlia Governorate, centered on the city of Mansoura, featured a series of 72 cultural activities, including performances, seminars, and workshops for people with disabilities.
The festival organized 11 specialized workshops covering acting, directing, scenography, playwriting, composition and production, aiming to discover and train young theatrical talent. The opening ceremony showcased the piece “Safar,” designed and directed by Walid Aouni, emerging from a movement‑expression workshop run by Karima Badir. Other staged works included “Metro Girl,” a product of the festival’s workshops, “130 Pieces,” and “Hawadit.”
A free online ticketing system was introduced, allowing audiences to book seats at midnight on the day of each show via QR code. The competition jury for the edition is chaired by director Khaled Galal and includes Dr. Ahlam Younis, actress Aida Fahmi, engineer Amr Abdullah Sharif, director Mohamed Zaki, musician Mahmoud Talaat, critic Ahmed Abdel‑Razek Abu Alaa, with Mahmoud Hassan acting as coordinator.
