Egypt's Qena General Hospital Director Dismissed Amid Criticism Over Hospital Conditions

Governor of Qena province dismissed the director of Qena General Hospital after a surprise inspection uncovered serious shortcomings in staffing, equipment and infrastructure. The Egyptian Doctors' Syndicate issued a formal letter to the prime minister, health minister and local development minister denouncing the public humiliation of the director and blaming systemic neglect rather than individual fault. Doctors expressed solidarity on social media, citing long‑standing issues such as inadequate facilities, unsafe living conditions for staff and high rates of doctor emigration.

Health Minister Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar acknowledged the problems in older hospitals, confirmed that immediate assistance was sent to the Qena facility, and announced the opening of a new hospital in the province within two months. He pledged continued field inspections and reforms to improve service delivery for the province’s three‑million residents.
