Egypt’s Sheikh Zayed Specialized Hospital Performs First Catheter‑Based Mitral Valve Repair

Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population announced that a team at Sheikh Zayed Specialized Hospital successfully carried out the country’s first transcatheter edge‑to‑edge repair (Mitral Clip) of a mitral valve, avoiding open‑heart surgery. The 73‑year‑old patient suffered severe shortness of breath, low cardiac‑output, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and previously underwent TAVI and coronary‑stent placement. The hour‑long procedure was performed under general anaesthesia with three‑ and four‑dimensional echo guidance. After a 24‑hour stay in intensive care the patient was discharged in stable condition for outpatient follow‑up. The achievement marks a milestone for Egypt’s interventional cardiology services and the Ministry’s effort to provide advanced cardiac care domestically.
