Egypt's Sisi meets Haftar to discuss Libyan stability

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar in Cairo to discuss stabilizing Libya and ending the country's political division. Sisi emphasized Egypt's commitment to Libya's territorial integrity and the necessity of unifying state institutions to facilitate presidential and parliamentary elections.

The meeting included high-level officials, such as Khaled Haftar and Belqasim Haftar from the Libyan side, and Egyptian Intelligence Chief Hassan Rashad. This follows Sisi's recent meeting with Tripoli-based Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, signaling intensified Egyptian mediation efforts.

Concurrently, UN envoy Stephanie Koury indicated that the UN is studying a transition to the next phase of a political roadmap. This roadmap focuses on three tracks: holding elections, structured dialogue, and unifying executive authority. There are also reports of a U.S.-led initiative aimed at merging the existing rival governments into a single administration, potentially led by Dbeibeh with a new presidential council.
