Egypt's Water Ministry Launches 2026/27 Water Year and Advances Generation‑2 Projects

On 1 August 2026 the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation opened the 2026/27 water year, following President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi’s directive to strengthen national water security and improve resource management. The ministry continued its integrated work programme, emphasizing modern technology, digital governance and smart‑water management to meet peak summer demand.

Key infrastructure projects under the Generation 2 Water System 2.0 are progressing: the West Delta agricultural‑drainage conveyance line, comprising 13 lift stations over 174 km, is about 79 % complete and targets the reclamation of 362 000 feddans. Two additional conveyance lines from the Sea Cow (Bahr al‑Baqr) treatment plant, spanning 105 km with 18 lift stations, are roughly 89 % finished, aiming to irrigate 456 000 feddans in northern and central Sinai. Ongoing maintenance of canals such as Wadi al‑Naqra, Suez and Port Said has helped resolve critical water‑distribution issues during the high‑need season.
