Egypt's World Cup squad hit by injuries before Australia clash

Egyptian national team doctor Mahmoud Abu Alaa reported that winger Mohamed Salah is suffering a hamstring strain, left‑back Ahmed Fetouh has a torn hamstring, and midfielder Mohamed Abdel‑Monem sustained a severe ankle bruise. The injuries were identified after Egypt's 1‑1 draw with Iran that secured the country's first ever progression to the World Cup round of 32.

Because of these ailments, the three players are in doubt for Egypt's upcoming knockout match against Australia on 3 July 2026. The medical team indicated that Salah is following a treatment programme, Fetouh may miss at least a month of play, and Abdel‑Monem is being prepared for the same fixture.

Egypt qualified for the knockout stage under coach Hossam Hassan after draws with Iran and Belgium and a win over New Zealand, and the injuries could affect the team's chances of advancing further.
