Egypt's Yellow Mountain Plant Becomes World's Largest Sewage Treatment Facility

The Yellow Mountain sewage treatment plant in Egypt, overseen by Governor Hossam Abdel Fattah of Qalyubia, was inspected by the European Union’s ambassador to Egypt, Angelina Aikhurst, alongside senior water‑utility officials. The plant currently processes 2.5 million cubic metres of wastewater daily, with a third phase under development that will raise total capacity to 3.5 million cubic metres per day, making it the largest facility of its kind worldwide by capacity.

The complex includes advanced treatment technologies, produces reclaimed water for irrigation, generates biogas from sludge to power about 70 % of its electricity needs, and creates treated sludge for safe reuse. Officials highlighted the project as a national flagship for modernising water infrastructure and protecting the environment, serving millions of residents in the Cairo and Qalyubia governorates.
