Spanish left-wing coalition adopts ‘Frente Amplio’ brand for 2027 elections
The Spanish left-wing coalition formerly known as Sumar has selected ‘Frente Amplio’ as its new electoral brand for the 2027 general elections. The decision was reached by the four core member parties: Izquierda Unida, Movimiento Sumar, Más Madrid, and Comuns. This move marks a transition from the personal leadership of Yolanda Díaz toward a collective coalition identity. The parties aim to officially unveil the brand, the coalition’s operational framework, and their presidential candidate by mid-October.
Parallel to these organizational shifts, the coalition is heavily focused on housing policy. Following the high-profile eviction of an elderly woman in Madrid, political pressure has mounted to pass a new housing decree. Negotiations are ongoing between the government, Sumar, and Junts to find a consensus. Proposed measures include rent freezes, increased regulation of seasonal and tourist apartments, and protections against evictions for vulnerable individuals. While Sumar advocates for stronger protections and potential expropriations, Junts is seeking tax incentives for property owners to unlock the legislative process.
