Ehime police officer disciplined for unreported traffic accident

An Ehime Prefectural Police sergeant has received a formal warning from his superior after failing to report a traffic accident involving his vehicle.

The incident occurred on July 28, 2026, while the officer was driving to work. While stopped at a traffic light, the officer released the brake pedal while attempting to reach for water in his bag, causing his light vehicle to rear-end the car in front.

Following the collision, the officer requested a private settlement from the other driver, noting that there were no injuries and only minor damage. During this interaction, he identified himself as a police officer. The accident was only discovered by his superiors after the other driver contacted the officer on the evening of the same day to report the incident. The Ehime Prefectural Police Inspection Office stated they will strengthen guidance and education for staff to prevent recurrence.
