Eid al-Adha slaughter and cleanup in Sharjah and Karachi
In Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, the city’s main livestock market abattoir processes thousands of sacrificial animals during Eid al‑Adha. Workers tag each animal, slaughter it in about two minutes, then skin it (five‑to‑seven minutes) before veterinary inspection. Cutting, which can take up to ten minutes, and packing take another few minutes, so the whole operation usually finishes in roughly 20 minutes per animal. A tagging system tracks meat throughout, and waste is collected separately for disposal.
In Karachi, Pakistan, Mayor Murtaza Wahab described the Eid cleanup as a major administrative challenge. Municipal teams remain on duty for five days, operating three major disposal sites for animal remains. Authorities disposed of about 98 tons of waste after last year’s Eid and expect higher volumes this year. The solid‑waste board handles collection, and residents are urged to report uncollected waste via a 1128 helpline, emphasizing public cooperation to maintain hygiene.
