Eifelkaserne expands training capacity with new container housing

The Eifelkaserne in Gerolstein has officially received new accommodation facilities to support the expansion of the German armed forces. On August 26, 2026, the Information Technology Battalion 281 took over the first units constructed under the ‘Immediate Program for Infrastructure Needs for Personnel Recruitment Organization’ (SIPGO).

These facilities consist of two three-story buildings made from 270 containers, providing 100 rooms as well as workspace and storage areas. This expansion effectively doubles the site's training capacity from 98 to 200 places per cycle. The infrastructure is designed to meet the needs of new recruits following the new military service law, which aims to increase the German military to nearly 460,000 active soldiers and reservists by 2035.

The SIPGO program is a nationwide initiative coordinated by the Federal Office for Infrastructure, Environmental Protection and Services of the Bundeswehr (BAIUDBw). It aims to provide flexible, container-based infrastructure across 32 locations, ultimately creating more than 8,600 accommodation spaces using 4,800 containers.
