Eight non-EU nations adopt sanctions against Belarus

Eight non-EU nations—Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, and Ukraine—have announced they will align their national regulations with the European Union’s latest sanctions against Belarus.

The measures, originally adopted by the EU Council on July 23, target trade, technology, and financial sectors to weaken Belarus’s military and industrial capabilities. The sanctions aim to restrict imports that provide alternative revenue sources for the regime and expand limitations on Belarusian participation in EU-based cryptocurrency activities, though exceptions remain for goods and services necessary for maintaining general internet infrastructure.

This alignment expands the geographic scope of the economic isolation against the administration of Alexander Lukashenko. The move is seen as a demonstration of political harmonization, particularly by EU candidate countries and members of the European Economic Area. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, described the move as a “solid collective position against actions perceived as aggressive in the region.”
