Eiichiro Oda intervened in Netflix One Piece production

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the One Piece manga, played a decisive role in ensuring the Netflix live-action adaptation remained faithful to the original source material. According to showrunner Steven Maeda, Netflix initially planned to reduce the first season from 10 episodes to 8 and significantly tighten the budget due to studio leadership changes.

To manage costs, writers considered major narrative compromises, such as introducing the character Usopp via a shipwreck on Gaimon’s island rather than depicting his home, Syrup Village. Oda rejected these changes, reportedly telling the production team, “This is not what I agreed to.”

Oda’s intervention forced Netflix to increase the budget to preserve key elements, including the introduction of Kaya, the Black Cat Pirates, and the Going Merry ship. His involvement helped prevent the series from deviating from the complex world and visual essence established in his manga.
