Ein el-Hilweh drug trafficking allegations spark calls for action

The rise of drug trafficking within the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon has created a significant challenge for both the Lebanese state and Palestinian authorities. While some accusations suggest the camp has become a central hub for distributing narcotics to southern towns, Palestinian factions and local committees reject these claims, arguing they stigmatize the camp and its residents.

Local sources point to economic distress, unemployment, and overcrowding as primary drivers of vulnerability to drug networks. Dr. Qasim Saad, Director General of the Nabaa Association for Developmental Work without Borders, emphasized that Ein el-Hilweh is an integral part of Lebanese territory and should not be treated as an isolated entity. He called for evidence-based investigations and field studies to address the issue without resorting to collective labeling.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the medical supervision of potential addiction treatment centers to ensure they meet professional standards and do not promote religious extremism. Experts suggest that a coordinated response involving community awareness, improved services, and better coordination between authorities is necessary to protect the youth and stabilize the region.
