Einstein’s equivalence principle observed in quantum objects
An international team of researchers has observed the effects of gravity on a falling quantum object for the first time, confirming that Albert Einstein’s equivalence principle remains consistent with quantum mechanics. The study, published in Science Advances, was led by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in collaboration with the University of Ulm and the University of Oxford.
Using a new apparatus called the Quantum Galileo Interferometer, scientists measured a distinctive change in the quantum properties of atoms as they fell under gravity. The measured effect matches the predictions made when applying the equivalence principle to a quantum wave packet. This principle suggests that an observer in free fall should experience local weightlessness.
While the experiment does not provide a unified theory of quantum gravity or prove that gravity itself is quantum, it demonstrates that Einstein’s fundamental gravitational principles hold true even at the quantum scale. The research involved Nobel laureate Roger Penrose and utilized ultracold atoms to bridge the gap between the two pillars of modern physics: general relativity and quantum mechanics.
