eir to begin retiring 3G network in Ireland from October 2026

Telecommunications provider eir has announced it will begin retiring its 3G network across Ireland starting October 1, 2026. The phased shutdown is intended to support the continued development and enhancement of 4G and 5G services.

Donegal is scheduled to be the first county to lose 3G services, with the rollout continuing across all other counties in the following weeks. The company stated that the transition will have no impact on the majority of customers who already utilize 4G or 5G networks.

A small number of customers relying solely on 3G services have been contacted directly with instructions for upgrading. Necessary steps for these users include updating device settings, receiving a free SIM card replacement, or transitioning to compatible devices. Eir confirmed that all calls and texts will continue to function normally for all customers following the switch-off.
