Eiras reservoir capacity falls below 40% amid Vigo drought
The Eiras reservoir, which supplies Vigo and surrounding municipalities, has fallen below 40% capacity due to ongoing drought conditions. Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero has warned that water meeting optimal quality standards is only guaranteed for approximately 38 days. If rainfall does not increase, he predicts the reservoir could reach its historical minimum level by November 2.
While an additional 57 days of water supply may be available after the initial period, the Mayor cautioned that water quality could decline, potentially requiring additional treatments to address issues such as iron content. Caballero credited the city's current ability to maintain supply to a 25-million-euro investment in a water treatment plant by the concessionaire Aqualia.
The water shortage has sparked a political dispute between the municipal government and the Xunta de Galicia. Caballero criticized the regional administration for failing to act on requests for a new dam made over 15 years ago, asserting that the lack of regional support has exacerbated the current crisis.
