Germany residential building permits rise significantly

Germany is seeing a significant rise in residential building permits. In June 2026, authorities approved 21,600 housing units, marking a 13.8 percent increase compared to the same month in the previous year.

For the first half of 2026, total building permits reached 126,300 units, a 15.1 percent increase. This represents the strongest growth for a first half-year since 2016. The increase is driven largely by new construction, which accounted for 103,100 units, including 24,000 single-family homes and 67,000 apartments in multi-family buildings.

Despite this upward trend, industry experts remain cautious. The Central Association of the German Construction Industry (ZDB) noted that while permits are rising, project cancellations are also increasing, with 13.1 percent of companies reporting canceled plans. Experts emphasize that rising permit numbers do not immediately translate to completed homes and call for more reliable framework conditions and funding to address the ongoing housing shortage.
