Eisenstadt to open unique biogas plant for waste-to-energy
Eisenstadt is set to open a unique biogas plant this October, designed to convert organic waste into electricity and heat. Located at the city's municipal depot, the facility consists of five recyclable stainless steel containers and utilizes a bacterial process to produce methane from organic waste and garden clippings.
The plant is part of a local energy system that integrates with photovoltaic installations and a 200 kWh battery storage unit. It is expected to generate approximately 400,000 kWh of electricity and 180,000 kWh of thermal energy annually. The electricity will primarily power the municipal depot and charge electric city buses, while surplus energy will be fed into a regional Raiffeisen energy cooperative.
The project employs a cascade use model: organic matter is first fermented for energy, and the remaining residues are subsequently processed into high-quality compost. This approach aligns with the city's 'Climate Roadmap 2040,' which includes various measures for energy, mobility, and waste management.
