EITI assessors arrive in Nigeria to evaluate extractive sector reforms

Global assessors from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) have arrived in Nigeria to conduct a validation mission for the 2026 EITI Validation Exercise. The mission, scheduled to run from August 10 to August 14, 2026, aims to evaluate the country’s progress in enhancing transparency and accountability within its oil, gas, and mining sectors.

The assessors will perform a comprehensive quality assurance assessment and hold consultations with a diverse group of stakeholders. This includes government institutions, the National Assembly, extractive companies, civil society organizations, anti-corruption agencies, and host communities. The goal is to assess Nigeria’s implementation of the EITI Standard and its adherence to corrective actions identified in previous assessments.

NEITI Executive Secretary Musa Sarkin Adar stated that the mission is an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s commitment to the prudent management of its natural resources and to identify areas for further reform. High-level meetings are expected with officials including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Ministers of Finance and Budget, and the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
