Şekib Avdagiç calls for Turkish AI independence to avoid global embargoes

Şekib Avdagiç, President of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO), has called for Turkey to develop its own artificial intelligence technologies to ensure national security and technological independence. Avdagiç warned that reliance on foreign AI models could lead to global embargoes similar to customs tariffs, where access to advanced intelligence could be restricted by other nations.

He emphasized that the AI race extends beyond software and algorithms to include critical infrastructure such as chips, GPUs, data centers, energy systems, cooling technologies, and robotics. Avdagiç proposed the concept of ‘AI Vatan’ (AI Homeland) to complement existing national strategic visions, arguing that importing American AI would create a new form of dependency.

Drawing parallels to European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde’s warnings regarding Europe's dependence on US technology, Avdagiç noted that Turkey must establish its own path. He expressed support for the Turkey Artificial Intelligence Action Plan (2026-2030) coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Technology.
