Ekiti APC Confirms Abiodun Oyebanji as 2022 Gubernatorial Candidate
Nigeria is preparing for the Ekiti State governorship election slated for June 18, 2022. Incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi (APC) will not seek re‑election, and both the APC and PDP are embroiled in internal disputes. Within the APC, several aspirants have emerged, while the PDP continues to grapple with a factional crisis stemming from parallel congresses held by former Governor Ayodele Fayose and his former deputy, Senator Biodun Olujimi. The party’s leadership has urged unity ahead of the contest, but tensions persist over candidate selection.
On June 17, the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered a unanimous judgment that rejected the appeal of Mrs Abimbola Olawumi, who challenged the APC primary outcome. The court ruled the appeal “had no merit” and affirmed that Abiodun Oyebanji remains the APC candidate for the June 18 election, dismissing procedural challenges and upholding the lower‑court decisions.
