Ekiti Governor Biodun Oyebanji credits Sani Abacha for state creation

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji stated that the state owes a debt of gratitude to former military Head of State Sani Abacha for its creation. Speaking at the ‘Ekiti at 30 Future Summit’ in Ado Ekiti, Oyebanji noted that Ekiti State was established on October 1, 1996, during Abacha’s military regime, having been carved out of the former Ondo State.

The Governor emphasized that while various leaders, traditional rulers, and community groups made significant sacrifices to advocate for the state, the administrative action of the Abacha regime was the essential mechanism for its existence. He remarked that despite potential controversy regarding the statement, the state remains grateful for the historical circumstances that allowed the aspirations of its people to be pursued more effectively.
