Ekrem İmamoğlu completes defense in Istanbul corruption trial

Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul, has completed a four-day defense in a high-profile corruption and criminal organization trial held at the Silivri Marmara Closed Prison. The case, involving 436 defendants with 53 currently in detention, includes allegations of bribery, money laundering, fraud, and the formation of a criminal organization.

During cross-examinations, İmamoğlu addressed various allegations, including the acquisition of a CHP provincial building and improper excavation dumping at the Cebeci mining site. He denied claims of illegal money transfers, characterizing such funds as donations, and rejected allegations regarding villa transfers and a money pool, asserting he has conducted his business honorably.

Imamoğlu characterized the legal proceedings as politically motivated attempts to suppress the will of the people and remove him from the political stage. He also highlighted personal attacks against his family and a travel ban on his son, Selim İmamoğlu.

In a recent interim decision, the court ordered the release of seven detained defendants, including Ümit Polat and Nilgün Cendek. However, the court ruled that İmamoğlu and 45 other defendants will remain in detention. The next hearing is scheduled for November 2.
