Ekrem İmamoğlu sentenced to prison and political ban in Turkey
Ekrem İmamoğlu, the former Mayor of Istanbul and a prominent political opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been sentenced to 25 months in prison. The court found him guilty of insulting a public official, a charge for which he had previously been acquitted twice. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a political activity ban that, if finalized, would formally remove him from office and allow the Istanbul City Council to select a new mayor.
İmamoğlu has criticized the judicial process, describing the Tuzla court ruling as a “complete scandal” and alleging that judges were changed to influence the outcome of his cases. He maintains that the proceedings are not being conducted fairly.
The sentencing has triggered mass protests in Istanbul, with thousands of citizens demonstrating in support of İmamoğlu. International bodies, including the European Parliament and the European Commission, have characterized the legal actions against him as a serious setback for democracy in Turkey. The Turkish government has denied all allegations of judicial interference.
