Eksta fined for destroying ancient archaeological remains
A Swedish court has increased the fine imposed on the company Eksta for the destruction of ancient archaeological remains in Kungsbacka. The company conducted excavation work in late 2022 without performing the mandatory archaeological investigations required by the County Administrative Board.
The site contained significant historical remains spanning the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Viking Age. Investigations revealed that large portions of the area were destroyed, resulting in a permanent loss of historical knowledge.
While the Varberg District Court initially set a corporate fine at 100,000 SEK, the prosecution appealed the decision. The Court of Appeal has now increased the penalty, ruling that the company acted with criminal negligence and caused significant damage to protected heritage sites.
