Ekurhuleni police investigate tenth woman's death in two months
South African police have discovered the body of a tenth woman in the Ekurhuleni municipality, east of Johannesburg, over the past two months. The latest victim was found on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in the Tembisa township near a cemetery. Local reports indicate the body was partially or semi-naked.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni stated that investigators are examining similarities in the cases, noting that police cannot rule out the possibility of a serial killer. While some victims have been found in open areas with signs of sexual assault, authorities are still working to establish definitive links between all the deaths.
This surge in killings occurs against the backdrop of a national gender-based violence crisis, which has been declared a national disaster in South Africa. The Gender-Based Violence Command Centre reported receiving 6,782 distress calls between September 1 and 16, marking a 21% increase compared to the previous month.
