El Bierzo industrial history linked to Bizkaia

At the beginning of the 20th century, industrialist Julio Lazúrtegui envisioned transforming El Bierzo into a steel-producing region similar to Bizkaia. Although his specific project for large-scale blast furnaces was never realized, Lazúrtegui and other Basque entrepreneurs and bankers provided the capital and impetus for the creation of the Minero Siderúrgica de Ponferrada (MSP).

This company drove the industrialization and economic transformation of the region through coal mining and mineral exploitation. The development included critical infrastructure such as thermal power plants and railway connections to transport coal for energy production. These historical links between El Bierzo and Bizkaia are preserved at the La Fábrica de la Luz Museum of Energy in Ponferrada, managed by the Ciudad de la Energía Foundation (CIUDEN).
