El Bierzo region features Roman heritage and Templar history
The El Bierzo region in León, Spain, offers a diverse landscape shaped by both natural transitions and ancient human engineering. A primary historical landmark is Las Médulas, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area’s unique relief was created by ancient Roman hydraulic engineering used during large-scale gold mining operations.
Beyond its natural beauty, the region is rich in medieval history and legends. The Cornatel Castle in Villavieja, a designated Bien de Interés Cultural, sits atop a steep cliff and is linked to the Knights Templar. While its origins may trace back to Roman military outposts, the castle became associated with the Order of the Temple in the 13th century, fueling long-standing legends regarding hidden treasures.
