El Bohodón pig farm project accused of evading environmental assessments

The Stop Ganadería Industrial collective has denounced a proposed pig macrofarm project in El Bohodón, Ávila, alleging it is designed to bypass mandatory environmental impact assessments. The project, submitted by the company La Chiona, S. C., plans for 1,994 fattening slots—just six fewer than the 2,000-slot threshold required by Castilla y León regional regulations to trigger more stringent environmental controls.

Critics also claim the project incorrectly states that El Bohodón is not a nitrate-vulnerable zone, despite it being declared as such by the Junta de Castilla y León in June 2020. The collective has urged the El Bohodón City Council to deny the urban and environmental licenses due to existing nitrate pollution levels. The public information period for the project remains open until September 2, 2026.
