El Cachón community demands mandatory consultation for mining permits

Community organizations in El Cachón, Barahona, have formally submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources demanding mandatory community consultations before any mining or material extraction permits are issued. The Los Almendros and Reyes Gómez neighborhood associations argue that granting such permits to companies like Grancera, or to private individuals, without local approval poses a direct threat to the region's water resources and ecosystems.

In addition to the demand for consultation, residents are planning a community vigil to protest the irregular construction of a road in the El Cobo sector by Mayker González. Community leaders claim the work is being conducted without the necessary permits and threatens local forests and aquifers. They further alleged that González has a history of unauthorized extractive operations in other regions, including Baní and Azúa.
