El Cairo, Colombia, devastated by earthquake
An earthquake on August 10 caused widespread destruction in the municipality of El Cairo, located in northern Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The seismic event destroyed approximately 90 percent of the town, which is recognized as part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape.
The disaster resulted in at least three fatalities: Leonor Panesso de Marín, Sandra Milena Molina Martínez, and Luis Gonzaga Bermúdez Jiménez. Acting Mayor Carlos Castro Correa described the scale of the devastation, stating, ‘Parecía el fin del mundo’ (It seemed like the end of the world).
