The El Cielo Biosphere Reserve in Tamaulipas, Mexico, is recognized as a vital ecological treasure due to its 144,000 hectares of cloud forests, pine trees, and water caves. These ecosystems serve as critical components of the monarch butterfly migratory route.

Research conducted by the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT), led by Dámaso Anaya Alvarado, focuses on preserving the region's biodiversity. This includes studying wild tree species and protecting unique flora, such as specific orchid varieties, as well as fauna like the jaguar. The conservation efforts involve scientific, educational, and community-based programs to address challenges such as pollution, pests, and climate change.
