El Cuchillo Dam expansion to double water capacity in Nuevo León

Nuevo León Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda has announced a plan to double the water storage capacity of the El Cuchillo Dam in the municipality of China. The project aims to increase capacity from 1,000 million to 2,000 million cubic meters by raising the dam's wall by four meters.

The executive project has received feasibility approval and the green light from the National Water Commission (Conagua), though it remains in the final approval stage. The expansion is intended to capture more water during hurricanes and cyclones, strengthen the water supply for Nuevo León, and reduce the volume of water currently lost to the Gulf of Mexico.

García intends to start the project before the end of his current administration, with an estimated completion date by 2029. The construction process is expected to take approximately one and a half years. Additionally, the state government plans to improve local tourism and fishing infrastructure, including the construction of docks to facilitate boat access.
