El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant installs Dry Shielding for third unit

The Nuclear Power Plants Authority has announced the successful installation of the Dry Shielding component for the third unit at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. The installation, completed on August 28, 2026, involved using specialized heavy-duty cranes to precisely place the component within the reactor cavity at elevations between +4.850 and +10.025 meters.

The Dry Shielding is a critical safety element for the VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactors. It is designed to surround the reactor pressure vessel to provide thermal and radiation protection for surrounding structures and equipment, while also mitigating neutron radiation. The component consists of a double-walled thick steel structure weighing 28.85 tons, which reaches a total weight of approximately 128 tons once the gap between the walls is filled with heat- and radiation-resistant serpentine concrete.

Dr. Sherif Helmy, Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, stated that this achievement marks a significant engineering milestone in the construction of the third unit. He emphasized that all works are conducted under strict supervision and in compliance with the safety standards and approvals issued by the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority.
