Strait of Hormuz tanker attack sparks US-Iran dispute
The Panama-flagged oil tanker El Gaia was struck in the Strait of Hormuz, sparking a dispute between the United States and Iran regarding the cause of the incident.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the vessel was hit by an Iranian missile last month, rendering it inoperable, and was subsequently struck again by an Iranian drone over the weekend. CENTCOM explicitly denied Iranian claims that the tanker hit a naval mine.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy maintains that the tanker, which they claim was attempting illegal passage, exploded after striking a naval mine. The IRGC also asserted that the Strait of Hormuz is currently under their control and closed to certain vessels.
The incident occurred off the coast of Oman. A Royal Navy of Oman vessel rescued 23 crew members, but two remain missing. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, one Indian national is among those unaccounted for. The attack has raised significant concerns regarding maritime security and the stability of global energy transit through the strategic waterway.
