El Hadji Amadou Dème and the legacy of Diyahou Nayiraïni

El Hadji Amadou Dème, a scholar from Sokone, Senegal, left a significant impact on West African Islamic thought through his monumental work, ‘Diyahou Nayiraïni’. Produced between 1938 and 1959, this twenty-volume Quranic exegesis is considered one of the most important scholarly works written by a Senegalese scholar in the 20th century.

Dème was known for balancing his religious teaching and manuscript writing with agricultural work. His comprehensive work covers not only Quranic verses but also Islamic jurisprudence, theology, Arabic grammar, history, morality, and social issues. The work is regarded by specialists as a reference point that extends its influence well beyond national borders.
