El Nacional fans clash with machetes near Atahualpa Stadium

Violence erupted in the streets surrounding the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium in Quito following a LigaPro Serie B match between El Nacional and 22 de Julio. Although El Nacional secured a 3-0 victory, the event was marred by clashes between groups of supporters.

Video footage captured by local residents shows fans engaging in confrontations involving insults, threats, and the throwing of stones and sticks. Notably, some individuals were seen wielding machetes during the disturbances. Reports suggest the violence may have involved two different factions within El Nacional’s organized supporter groups due to internal differences.

The National Police and security blocks intervened to disperse the crowds and prevent the situation from escalating further. This incident follows previous instances of unrest involving El Nacional supporters, including a confrontation in August 2025.
