El Nino expected to bring mild autumn to Canada

A forecast from The Weather Network suggests that Canada may experience a mild autumn, with a potentially historic El Nino phenomenon expected to delay the arrival of winter.

Senior meteorologist Doug Gillham noted that while September and October will see typical fluctuations between warm and chilly weather, the overall trend is expected to be milder and drier than normal in many regions. The El Nino effect is anticipated to shift storm tracks south, bringing milder Pacific air to Canada and limiting the southward movement of cold Arctic air.

While the phenomenon may result in fewer classic fall storms and a milder start to winter, Gillham cautioned that the storms that do occur could still be intense. Globally, the El Nino event is expected to spike temperatures and increase the risk of floods, droughts, and extreme heat into 2027.
