El Nino triggers weather warnings in Tamil Nadu and power shortages in Telangana
An expert committee appointed by the Tamil Nadu government has warned of contrasting weather risks driven by the El Nino phenomenon. The panel, led by Dr. Sivananda Pai, predicts that the 2026 northeast monsoon may bring heavy rainfall, leading to urban, riverine, and coastal flooding. Conversely, the committee cautioned that rainfall may be uneven, potentially causing water scarcity and drought stress in certain regions.
Looking further ahead, the committee anticipates severe heatwaves and heat stress during the summer of 2027. They have recommended a three-stage preparedness framework covering agriculture, public health, and critical infrastructure to mitigate these risks.
In Telangana, the El Nino effect has already impacted energy production. Deficient monsoon rainfall has caused hydropower generation to drop significantly, falling to 424 MW compared to 1,940 MW during the same period last year. This decline has led to a 62 percent increase in energy exchange day-ahead market bids and a 22 percent rise in the state's average energy cost burden.
