El Niño and polar vortex shifts may trigger extreme winter in Europe
Meteorological projections suggest that the 2026-2027 winter season in Europe may be characterized by significant temperature extremes and volatile weather patterns. This potential shift is driven by the strengthening of the El Niño phenomenon in the tropical Pacific and the possible weakening of the polar vortex.
El Niño, which involves the warming of equatorial Pacific waters, alters global atmospheric circulation. While its influence on Europe is indirect, it can modify storm tracks and air mass distribution. Simultaneously, if the polar vortex—a low-pressure area in the Arctic stratosphere—becomes unstable or fragments, frigid Arctic air can descend into lower latitudes, potentially causing intense cold spells and snowfall.
In regions such as Slovakia, forecasts indicate a high probability of a highly variable winter. Depending on the interaction of these climate drivers, the season could oscillate between unusually warm, rainy periods and sudden, severe incursions of cold air.
