Brazil Braces for Unusual Heat and Storms as El Niño Strengthens

The El Niño phenomenon is driving an atypical winter across Brazil, with a strong low‑level jet over Bolivia funneling hot air southward. Meteorologists say the resulting atmospheric block is preventing cold fronts from reaching most of the country, leading to a prolonged heat wave.

Temperatures are expected to reach 35‑40 °C in the Central‑West and Southeast states such as Mato Grosso, Goiás, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. The South will see alternating periods of intense heat and severe thunderstorms, including hail, strong winds and heavy rain. Experts note that the clash of hot and cold air masses is producing exceptionally tall thunderclouds, raising the risk of flash floods and wind gusts up to 100 km/h.

In the Amazonian state of Acre, officials have already issued a water‑crisis alert as reservoirs operate at only 30‑40 % capacity. The same El Niño‑driven pattern is expected to worsen drought conditions and raise fire risk throughout the region. The combined heat, storms and drying trend are projected to continue through the latter half of July and into August, with further impacts anticipated across Brazil’s interior and coastal zones.
