El Niño phenomenon impacts Brazil's health and livestock sectors

The El Niño phenomenon is causing significant climatic shifts across Brazil, affecting both public health and the agricultural sector. In Pará de Minas, health authorities are warning residents about increased risks of respiratory diseases, dehydration, and the accelerated development of the Aedes aegypti mosquito due to rising temperatures. This mosquito, which transmits dengue, chikungunya, and zika, can reach adulthood faster in warmer water, necessitating stricter prevention of breeding sites.

In the livestock industry, irregular rainfall patterns are altering pasture growth and nutritional quality. While the South may experience excessive rain, the North and Northeast face prolonged dry periods and water stress. These conditions reduce the protein and digestibility of forage, potentially leading to lower weight gain, reduced reproductive rates, and delayed slaughter ages in cattle. Experts recommend strategic nutritional supplementation to mitigate these climate-driven productivity losses.
