El Niño phenomenon impacts Galapagos penguins and South American resources

The El Niño phenomenon is threatening the survival of endemic Galapagos penguins in Ecuador. Rising sea temperatures, reaching up to 26 °C in some areas, are reducing food availability by driving fish populations away, which hinders both feeding and reproduction. Historical data from the 1997-98 El Niño event shows a significant population decline from approximately 1,300 to 400 individuals.

In Colombia, the government has launched a conservation campaign to reduce water, gas, and electricity consumption. This measure aims to raise reservoir levels above 80% capacity by November 30 to mitigate risks to water supply and hydroelectric generation, as the phenomenon may persist until mid-2027.

In Peru, Engie Energía Perú has expanded the Intipampa Solar Plant in Moquegua by 51.7 megawatts, bringing its total capacity to 91.7 MW. The company has also begun construction on the Hanaqpampa Solar Plant, which is expected to provide 140.8 MW by the first quarter of 2028.
