El Ojo island in Argentina's Paraná Delta rotates and moves
El Ojo, a unique circular island located in the Paraná Delta within the El Escobar municipality, has gained attention due to its near-perfect geometric shape and its ability to rotate and change position. Situated approximately 70 kilometers from Buenos Aires, the island currently has a diameter of about 118 meters, though it is expected to shrink over time due to erosion.
While the island gained significant public awareness in 2016 through filmmaker Sergio Neuspiller, satellite imagery confirms its existence as early as 2003, with some aerial records dating back to the 1980s. The area is noted for its unusually transparent water despite a dark soil bottom.
In an effort to study the site, Sergio Neuspiller and hydraulic engineer Ricardo Petroni launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund a scientific expedition involving diving, soil analysis, and drone surveys. However, the campaign only raised about one-fifth of the required $50,000 goal.
