El Prat Airport expansion enters new phase under DORA III plan

The Spanish government has initiated a new phase of infrastructure reform for Aena's airports through the DORA III regulatory document for 2027-2031. This plan allocates approximately 13 billion euros to Spanish airports, with 1.76 billion euros earmarked for El Prat Airport.

Rather than immediate large-scale expansion, this initial investment focuses on preparatory works and reforms for terminals T1 and T2, including improvements to parking, airfield operations, and platforms. More controversial projects, such as the construction of a satellite terminal and increases in long-haul flight capacity, are expected to be delayed until at least 2032.

The move has reignited debate between those who view the upgrades as necessary to handle rising passenger numbers and environmental groups like Zeroport, who oppose the expansion due to potential ecological damage and impacts on Barcelona.
