Huesca wildfire: UME soldier killed in vehicle accident

A member of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) has died following a vehicle accident during firefighting operations at the Las Peñas de Riglos forest fire in Huesca. The accident occurred when a truck carrying four personnel overturned in a ravine near Atarés. One soldier was killed, while the other three occupants sustained various injuries; one was evacuated by helicopter.

The wildfire has affected more than 16,600 hectares and has moved toward the city of Jaca, threatening the Monte Oroel area. An extensive emergency operation is underway, involving approximately 1,000 personnel and between 35 and 40 aerial resources, including contributions from other Spanish regions and France.

While firefighting directors have expressed “certain optimism” due to improved weather conditions and the stabilization of some perimeters, officials urge extreme caution. The situation remains complex due to unpredictable weather, including the potential for dry thunderstorms and low humidity levels.
