El Rey archaeological site vandalized by parkour stunts
A group of foreign youths, identified as being from Argentina, sparked outrage after being filmed performing parkour maneuvers on the ancient Mayan structures at the El Rey archaeological site in Cancún.
The individuals reportedly jumped over protection boundaries and scaled sacred buildings to create content for digital platforms. The incident violated strict regulations set by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which prohibit direct contact with structures, climbing on bases, and the unauthorized use of drones. Specialists warn that such actions cause irreversible damage to the ancient masonry due to weight and friction.
While the footage has circulated widely, local authorities and the INAH Quintana Roo delegation have not yet issued an official statement regarding sanctions or the identification of the responsible parties. Local collectives are now demanding stricter enforcement of the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic, and Historic Monuments and Zones.
